THC Toxicity in Pets

Marijuana and its derivatives contain psychoactive substances that give humans a “high” and are toxic to pets.

Dogs and cats are much more sensitive to THC than humans.

Pets can be poisoned by Marijuana in different ways:

  • Eating commercial or homemade edibles such as baked goods or candies

  • Ingesting marijuana-related products such as oils or inhalers

  • Inhaling it through secondhand smoke

Signs can occur from 5 minutes to hours after a pet is exposed and may last hours to days.

  • Lethargy

  • Whining or crying

  • Agitation

  • Dilated pupils

  • Glassed-over eyes

  • Dazed expression

  • Difficulty walking/wobbliness

  • Incontinence/dribbling urine

  • Vomiting

  • Overreaction to sounds

  • Low or high heart rate

  • Increased/decreased body

  • Temperature

  • Tremors

  • Seizures or coma
