Jessica Martin
Dr. Martin’s decision to become a veterinarian stemmed from an interest in epidemiology, disease outbreaks, and a curiosity about diseases that jump species from animals to humans. Dr. Martin earned a Master of Public Health degree, with a specialty focus in infectious/zoonotic diseases and human toxicology, as well as a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida.
After graduating in 2013, Dr. Martin returned to South Florida, where she worked in small animal general practice for six years. A few moonlighting (overnight) shifts at an emergency hospital in 2019 exposed her to a variety of clinical cases focused on internal medicine, toxicology, trauma, and surgery. Finding the intensity of emergency medicine more fulfilling, she decided to leave general practice and pursue emergency medicine full-time in 2019. Dr. Martin is Fear Free and CPR Recovery certified.
In her spare time, Dr. Martin enjoys outdoor cycling, exploring nature trails, pottery, reading, traveling, playing billiards, and spending time with family and friends. Her home is governed by a large boxer/Staffordshire terrier mix named Radar. Aptly nicknamed “Southern Charm,” he has never met someone he didn’t classify as a friend within five minutes. Radar enjoys long walks, belly rubs, and treats.
Dr. Martin’s hope for the future is to align with the George Snow Scholarship Fund to develop a scholarship for high school students interested in pursuing higher education geared toward a career in veterinary medicine.
